“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:15-16).
The Greek word for redeem means “to buy up, to rescue from loss.” We are all given the same amount of seconds, minutes, and hours each day. How are we using them? If one’s life is but a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away (James 4:14), then how much more so a day? Therefore, the child of God must rescue our precious and fleeting time from loss, and make the wisest use of it. The ESV renders this passage as, “making the best use of the time.” The NIV reads: “making the most of every opportunity.”
Let us awake each day with the determination to make the best use of our time. Let us treasure each day the Lord blesses us with by making the most of every opportunity given to us. As we sometimes sing: “Swiftly we’re turning life’s daily pages; swiftly the hours are changing to years. How are we using God’s golden moments? Shall we reap glory? Shall we reap tears?” So, let us redeem the time with our spouse, our children, our parents, our grandparents, our siblings, our brothers and sisters in Christ, studying the Word of God, praying earnestly, restoring the wayward, converting the lost, doing good works, adding to our faith, and pressing towards Heaven!
