The Bitter Fruit of Gossip
by Heath Rogers

Violates trust by revealing secrets. “A talebearer reveals secrets, but he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter” (Proverbs 11:13). “He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips” (Proverbs 20:19).

Introduces an abundant source of evil into one’s surroundings. “The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil” (Proverbs 15:28).

Destroys friendships. “A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends” (Proverbs 16:28).

It exposes the gossip as a fool. “He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive” (Proverbs 17:27-28).

Produces anger. “The north wind brings forth rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance” (Proverbs 25:23).

Produces strife. “Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no talebearer, strife ceases” (Proverbs 26:20).

Condemns the gossip’s soul. “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:37).
